Zanzibar’s Entry Requirements
Visa Requirements
Most travellers require a visa to enter Zanzibar (Tanzania). The cost of this is $50 USD (or $100 USD for US Citizens).
This visa is typically granted for a period of 90 days.
There are two options to obtain this visa:
On arrival at Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ). You will be required to show your return ticket out of Zanzibar.
Online. We recommend applying for an E-Visa to Zanzibar to save time when you arrive at the airport. You can do so on Tanzania’s official E-Visa website here: https://visa.immigration.go.tz/
Notes: Some nationalities do not require a visa. Check the Tanzanian immigration website for the latest updates.
2. Zanzibar Travel Insurance
As of October 2024, Zanzibar requires every traveller to purchase travel insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation prior to entering the country - regardless if you have any other type of insurance or coverage. The only exemption to this rule is for Tanzanian Residents.
The cost for this insurance is $44 USD per person.
This insurance can be obtained in advance online, or on arrival at Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ). Note that some international airports are requiring proof of insurance prior to boarding, so we recommend applying online prior to travelling.
You can apply for your insurance online here: https://visitzanzibar.go.tz/insurance
3. Passport & Validity
Your Passport must be:
Valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date
Have at least one blank page for stamps
Vaccine Requirements
There are no vaccines required to enter Tanzania or Zanzibar.
Note: A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate may be required only if you are traveling from (or transiting for more than 12 hours in) a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Please always check for the latest guidelines if you are travelling from a country with a high risk of yellow fever.
Now that you’ve prepared all the documents needed to enter Zanzibar - we’ve also prepared a short packing list with some essentials to ensure a smooth and stress-free vacation!
Packing List for Zanzibar
Essential Documents
Passport (valid for at least 6 months)- E-visa printout (if applicable)- Flight tickets (return flight especially important if doing visa on arrival) & accommodation confirmation- ZIC Travel Insurance- Yellow fever vaccine certificate (if needed)
Clothing & Footwear
Light, breathable clothing – Cotton or linen fabrics are best for the tropical climate
Swimwear – Perfect for the beach (but remember to be respectful of the local Muslim culture and cover up when outside beach areas!)
Sarong or cover-up – Useful for passing through villages or conservative areas
Casual evening outfits – Resorts and restaurants may have dress codes
Comfortable sneakers – Great for exploring and walking tours
Sandals - Easy to get on and off while on the beach or in wet landscapes
Hat & sunglasses – Essential for sun protection. The UV is extremely strong in Zanzibar!
Water-shoes - Helpful when exploring the ocean in low tide to prevent any injuries from sea urchins or other sharp shells or coral
Toiletries & Health Essentials
Most of these items you’ll be able to find at supermarkets around the island, although sometimes they can be difficult to find. These are imported items and likely won’t be any brands you know, so especially if you have sensitive skin - we recommend to bring with you.
Mosquito repellent – Zanzibar is a tropical island, so mosquito protection can be useful (mosquitos typically only frequent very lush, forest areas or after it rains).
Prescription medications – Bring enough for your trip!
Basic first aid kit – Band-aids, pain relievers, and motion sickness pills if needed
Sunscreen (reef-safe!) – Protect your skin while keeping the ocean safe. The UV is extremely strong in Zanzibar so consider this when looking at protection offered.
Tech & Travel Accessories
Unlocked phone – Local SIM cards are cheap and provide great coverage
Universal travel adapter – Tanzania uses Type D & G plugs (same as the UK). Please note that power goes on and off a lot in Zanzibar which can cause some severe fluctuations. Make sure you get a well equipped adapter to account for these fluctuations and protect your electronics!
Camera, GoPro, Drone – Capture Zanzibar’s breathtaking landscapes! You’ll want to capture everything on ground, underwater, and from the sky - especially the stunning sandbanks!
Books or E-Reader – Perfect for relaxing on the beach
Power Bank - Try to keep charged at all times in case of any prolonged power outages.
Extras for Excursions & Activities
Waterproof dry bag & waterproof phone case/pouch – Keeps your valuables safe during boat trips
